JEFF BOYD

Jeff Boyd has been a trial lawyer since 1982 and a nationally known trial consultant since 1998.  He has tried or arbitrated over 100 civil cases to verdict and has conducted over 1,000 interactive focus groups.  He is a member of the American Society of Trial Consultants (ASTC), the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), the American Association for Justice (AAJ), and the Washington State Association for Justice (WSAJ). He is also Co-Chair of AAJ’s Jury Bias Litigation Group and is a frequent lecturer and author on all manner of jury trial subjects.

Jeff received his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Kent State University and his law degree from The Ohio State University.  He spent the first 27 years of his legal career in Ohio where he tried cases throughout the state.  He was president of the Central Ohio Association for Justice and was active in the Ohio Association for Justice where he received the President’s Award.

In 2009, Jeff moved to Seattle and formed Nelson Boyd Attorneys with Deborah Nelson.  He focuses his law practice on serious plaintiff’s personal injury, government liability, medical negligence, legal malpractice, and complex litigation.  He is the recipient of the Washington State Association for Justice’s Professionalism Award and has been repeatedly named a Super Lawyer and a member of Best Lawyers.

Jeff spends more than half of his professional time doing trial consulting and working with Boyd Trial Consulting’s clients. His emphasis is on highly interactive focus groups; his goal is to identify and deal with juror bias and to get jurors to open up about how they feel about the evidence they are seeing. He conducts intensive work sessions with BTC’s clients and their teams to plan for interactive focus groups and drill down on what they learned at the focus groups to make use of that information to strengthen the case.  He also enjoys doing full service trial consulting throughout the course of the case, assisting with developing effective juror questionnaires, and assisting BTC clients with jury selection at trial.

In his spare time, Jeff enjoys road cycling, snow skiing, traveling, and hot rods. He brings the same passion to his professional pursuits reveling in the combination of intellectualism and street smarts that a career as a trial lawyer demands.

BTC clients have referred to Jeff as “the Gold Standard – we always use him,” they speak of his process as “a colossal time-saver,” and have said having Jeff conduct their interactive focus groups was “the most important thing I’ve done as a lawyer to prepare for trial.”

DEBORAH NELSON

Deborah Nelson graduated magna cum laude from Georgia Southern University in Savannah, Georgia, and the University of Cincinnati College of Law. She is a partner in Seattle based Nelson Boyd Attorneys and is a partner in Boyd Trial Consulting, a national trial consulting firm that provides interactive focus groups, mock trials, surveys, witness preparation, assistance with voir dire, and related services.

Deborah is a past President of the Washington State Association for Justice (WSAJ) and a past president of the American Association for Justice’s (AAJ) Council of Presidents. She is past chair of AAJ’s Insurance Law Section and is a member of AAJ’s Jury Bias Litigation Group and Leaders Forum. She is also a member of the American Society of Trial Consultants (ASTC), the American Psychological Association’s Behavior Analysis Division, and the American Psychology-Law Society.

More About Deborah

Deborah has lectured locally, nationally, and internationally on a variety of legal topics especially in the areas of traumatic brain injury, insurance litigation, legal malpractice, jury trials, and focus groups.  She has also written numerous articles and has been published in Washington Association for Justice’s Trial News, American Association for Justice’s Trial magazine and other publications.  Deborah focuses her law practice in the areas of legal malpractice, serious personal injury, and insurance litigation.  She has been named a Super Lawyer for more than 20 years and has been repeatedly named to Best Lawyers.

Deborah serves on the Board of the Georgia Southern University Foundation and was the commencement speaker at the University’s Fall commencement in Savannah, GA in December 2022. 

In her spare time, Deborah enjoys cycling, swimming, and traveling.  In addition, she sings with The Swedish Singers of Seattle, is doing her best to learn Swedish, and travels to Sweden frequently to visit her family there

Deborah has been a partner in Boyd Trial Consulting since 2009.  She attends all focus groups, assists with analysis, designs surveys, and works with BTC clients on witness preparation for depositions, arbitration, and trial.  BTC clients have found Deborah’s witness preparation to be “tremendously helpful” and have complimented her on her “extraordinary sensitivity and skill.”
